Chains are reshaping Ireland’s foodservice market, but their influence varies sharply by segment.
Across Ireland, 63 chain brands operate around 1,800 stores and command 30% of consumer traffic. This shows that chain operators punch well above their weight. Their store footprint may be limited compared with the wider foodservice market, but their share of visits is much stronger.
The imbalance is most visible in fast food. In the burger segment, chains capture 91% of visits, making it the most chain-dominated category in Irish quick service. Chicken follows closely, with chains accounting for 85% of visits, while pizza also shows strong chain influence at 58%.
By contrast, coffee and bakery or sandwich chains each account for 37% of visits, showing a more balanced split between chain and independent operators. Casual dining remains the most independent-led area, with chains capturing only 9% of visits.
This highlights how uneven chain penetration remains across the Irish foodservice market. In quick service categories such as burgers and chicken, chains are already the dominant force in consumer traffic. In restaurants and casual dining, independents continue to account for the vast majority of visits.
Chains also benefit from structural advantages. They typically have stronger brand recognition, larger marketing budgets, loyalty apps, national campaigns, better locations and longer opening hours. These factors help chains generate significantly more visits per site than independents.
Maria Vanifatova, CEO of Meaningful Vision, said:
“Chains are not equally strong across every part of the Irish foodservice market. Their dominance is most visible in burgers and chicken, where the majority of visits already go to chain brands. However, casual dining and parts of the coffee and bakery market remain much more open to independents. For operators, this means the competitive picture needs to be assessed segment by segment, not just at total market level.”
