Coffee Shops Openings YoY

UK Coffee Shop Expansion Slows to 0.8%

Coffee shop openings grew by just 0.8% year on year in the first half of 2026. Two years earlier, growth was almost 6 times higher.

That is a substantial change for a market that has been growing so quickly over the past few years.

Meaningful Vision shows the trajectory clearly: coffee shop openings rate was 4.5% in H1 2024, slowed to 2.8% in H1 2025, and fell again to 0.8% in H1 2026.

The wider branded coffee shop and bakery segment now comprises around 13,000 outlets, according to Meaningful Vision’s recent analysis.

Growth has not disappeared. What has changed is the margin for error.

Growth has not disappeared, but expansion is becoming more selective.

Expansion is becoming more selective

Newer and expanding operators continue to find opportunities. Blank Street Coffee, Black Sheep Coffee and Joe & The Juice are among the chains highlighted in Meaningful Vision data as growing brands.

Their expansion sits alongside a much slower overall market, suggesting that future growth will depend less on adding sites across the board and more on finding specific locations where demand can support another outlet.

That changes the question facing an expansion team. The performance of the individual location becomes much more important.

The analysis points to the same issue: as the UK coffee shop market matures, the cost of selecting the wrong site increases.

Store count alone does not show whether a proposed location has enough demand, when that demand occurs or how established competitors nearby are performing.

Meaningful Vision tracks visitor volumes at competitor outlets by location, day and hour. That allows operators to add observed competitor traffic to their existing property, demographic and catchment data when assessing a potential site.

This becomes particularly relevant as coffee shops compete across more occasions. Meaningful Vision data shows lunch and the 3pm to 6pm period gaining importance, with those periods accounting for around 36% and 27% of daily coffee and bakery visits respectively in H1 2026.

A location that looks attractive on annual footfall can tell a different story when demand is viewed hour by hour.

At 0.8% market growth, the next question is where another coffee shop should open.
