Coffee Shops Openings YoY

UK Coffee Shop Expansion Slows to 0.8%

Coffee shop openings grew by just 0.8% year on year in the first half of 2026. Two years earlier, growth was almost 6 times higher.

This is a substantial change for a market that has been growing so quickly over the past few years.

Meaningful Vision data shows the trajectory clearly: the coffee shop openings rate was 4.5% in H1 2024, but slowed to 2.8% in H1 2025, and fell again to 0.8% in H1 2026.

The wider branded coffee shop and bakery segment now comprises around 13,000 outlets, according to Meaningful Vision’s recent analysis.

Growth has not disappeared, but the rate has slowed and the focus has narrowed.

Expansion is becoming more selective

Newer and expanding operators continue to find opportunities. Blank Street Coffee, Black Sheep Coffee and Joe & The Juice are among the chains highlighted in Meaningful Vision data as growing brands.

Their expansion sits alongside a much slower overall market, suggesting that future growth will depend less on adding sites across the board and more on finding specific locations where demand can support another outlet.

That changes the question facing an expansion team. The performance of the individual location becomes much more important than considering the larger region or area.

Analysis points to the same issue: as the UK coffee shop market matures, the cost of selecting the wrong site increases.

Store count alone cannot reveal whether a proposed location enjoys strong demand, nor when demand may be at its peak during a typical day, nor how established competitors nearby may be performing.

Meaningful Vision tracks visitor volumes at competitor outlets by location, day and hour. That allows operators to add observed competitor traffic to their existing property, demographic and catchment data when assessing a potential site.

This becomes particularly relevant as coffee shops compete across more occasions. Meaningful Vision data shows lunchtime and the 3pm to 6pm period gaining in importance, with those periods accounting for around 36% and 27% of daily coffee and bakery visits respectively in H1 2026.

A location that looks attractive by measure of annual footfall alone, may tell a very different story when demand is viewed hour by hour.

At 0.8% market growth, the question “where should we open another coffee shop?” needs to be answered very carefully, with decisions informed by accurate and up-to-date real-world data.
